During a flat period here in Peniche two of our young guns borrowed an old Moby from our factory to get some water time. Both came back stoked and felt it had potential. The Moby allowed for easy surfing but lacked the manoeuvrability they like for big turns and airs. So Gero took it back to the drawing board, seeking inspiration from Bob Simmon’s classic designs, modern short surfboards and even wakeboards.

Our starting point was the Moby but in the end the Habano turned into something very different with many unique, revolutionary details.

One obvious feature is the bevelled rails, these allow more volume in the board but keep the edge as thin as you need for a high performance board.

Then there’s the outline: you ride this board a couple of inches shorter than your regular shortboard, but due to the straight rails the effective rail in the water is longer. This leaves you with a significantly shorter board which feels alive, solid in the pocket and snappy in your top turns. The longer rail in the water offers you more hold for your bottom turn, which is essential for speed, so you get the best of both worlds.

Initially the Habano was designed for super small surf and that’s where it works unbelievably well. However we’ve already spotted our riders scoring solid Supertubos on this masterpiece.
